What is HP4INDUSTRY about?

HP4INDUSTRY is a European project funded under the LIFE Programme. It kicked off in January 2026 and will run for three years, bringing together 10 partners from 5 countries. The project has an overall budget of over €1.8 million and aims to accelerate the uptake of industrial heat pumps across Europe.

The project focuses on three key sectors, paper & pulp, chemicals, and food & beverage, where low- and medium-temperature process heat offers significant potential for industrial heat pump deployment.

By promoting replicable models and standardised solutions, HP4INDUSTRY aims to make the integration of large-scale heat pumps easier, more cost-effective, and scalable. Industrial heat pumps can recover excess heat generated during production, upgrade it and reuse it within industrial processes, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and cut CO₂ emissions.

The project will also explore how industrial heat pumps can work alongside complementary renewable and efficiency solutions, including solar thermal, geothermal energy, waste heat recovery, storage and flexibility measures. This integrated approach can help industries access cleaner, more resilient and efficient heating and cooling systems.

Through collaboration between industry representatives and technology providers, HP4INDUSTRY will support practical solutions, business models and tools to help industries move towards cleaner and more efficient heating and cooling.

Meet the HP4INDUSTRY partners

HP4INDUSTRY brings together 10 partners from across Europe, combining expertise from industry, research, technology, and clean energy associations.

The consortium includes partners specialised in industrial heat pumps, geothermal and solar thermal energy, energy optimisation, demand-side flexibility, process modelling and industrial applications in the paper & pulp and food & beverage sectors.

Share your input via the survey on industrial heat needs

Are you a manufacturer in the food & beverage, pulp & paper or chemical sector interested in decarbonising your process heat?

HP4INDUSTRY is collecting input from industrial stakeholders across Europe to map current heat needs, challenges, and opportunities for renewable and efficient industrial heat solutions.

Your contribution will help shape project activities and support the development of solutions that respond to real industrial needs.

The survey only takes around 10 minutes to complete.

Take the survey!

Take part in the project and join the HP4INDUSTRY working groups!

HP4INDUSTRY is launching two working groups to support the integration of industrial heat pumps in real industrial contexts: one focused on the pulp & paper sector and one on the chemical sector.

The working groups will bring together industrial end-users, technology providers, research organisations, consultants and other experts to explore practical solutions for heat pump integration. Participants will work on representative virtual cases, looking at process conditions, heat and cold demand, energy storage, flexibility options, electricity markets, grid connection challenges and business models.

The aim is to develop standard solutions, tools and business cases that can support the wider deployment of industrial heat pumps across Europe, while helping industry reduce costs, decarbonise process heat and increase energy resilience.

Participation will take place on a non-confidential basis and in line with EU competition rules. No company-specific data will be requested. The working groups are expected to run for around one year, with online meetings every four weeks and an estimated commitment of around one day per month.

Annual Event of the SET Plan Implementation Working Group - Industry

27 May 2026, Brussels

In May, HP4INDUSTRY was presented at the SET Plan IWG-Industry 2026 Annual Event, focused on integrating industrial electrification into the energy system and supporting its deployment across European regions.

Project coordinator Philippe Dumas from EGEC Geothermal introduced HP4INDUSTRY’s objectives, scope, consortium, and methodology for developing clean-tech solutions to decarbonise industrial processes. The event also provided an opportunity to exchange with other industrial decarbonisation projects and discuss how heat pumps, solar thermal, and geothermal solutions can support the transition away from fossil fuels.
